Please join us in welcoming Peanut to the pack! 🖤🐾

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome a seven-year-old female African wild dog named Peanut to our DZCA family! Peanut joined us all the way from Honolulu Zoo on a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan.

African wild dogs, also known as African painted dogs, have a very complex social structure that requires carefully managed introductions and general care. Peanut was first introduced to her new mate and pack alpha, Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, followed by David (Dave) Livingstone and then Nigel. Thanks to the skill and dedication of our Animal Care team, each introduction went smoothly, and Peanut is now a fully integrated member of the pack!

These dogs are Endangered according to the IUCN Red List, so we're hopeful for potential puppies in the future to help bolster populations in human care. Be sure to visit DZCA to learn more about these incredible carnivores and to say hi to Peanut in person!
